2013 hot shopping centers in Japan

Gourmet foods and items from all over Japan are brought together in Tokyo, the land gateway to Japan.

“KITTE” & “First Avenue Tokyo Station Okashi Land”

Tokyo Station is the land gateway to Japan, where railways to and from destinations across Japan depart or arrive. In this area, there is a place where you can enjoy gourmet foods from all over Japan, or encounter items that reflect craftsmanship or aesthetics while being in Tokyo – this place is “KITTE”, a commercial establishment consisting of 98 shops from across Japan that opened in March 2013.

There are many shops that sell products in which traditional skills and modern designs are combined, such as “Hacoa DIRECT STORE”, which sells wood products in which lacquer ware techniques are applied, including wooden business card holders, and “nugoo Kamakura”, which sells colorful hand towels and wrapping cloths made using a traditional dyeing technique. There are also a variety of restaurants where you can taste foods from across Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu, that cover a broad price range, from sushi and sukiyaki to the Japanese soul food “ramen”.

A recommended destination for those who love snacks or have families is “Tokyo Okashi Land”, located in First Avenue Tokyo Station inside Tokyo Station. It is an area with an exciting pop interior in which satellite shops of three major snack makers, Calbee, Ezaki Glico and Morinaga & Company can be found. Crispy potato chips freshly-fried in a glass-walled kitchen and freshly-made almond chocolate with a fragrant aroma and melting texture are exceptional. In addition to freshly-made snacks, there are a wide variety of products, including some limited to Tokyo Okashi Land, or local specialty products.

“SHISUI PREMIUM OUTLETS®[NARITA]” & “New Chitose Airport Terminal ‘Hokkaido Showroom’”

There have been an increasing number of full-fledged commercial facilities in airport areas, which serve as “air gateways” of each area.
First of all, there is SHISUI PREMIUM OUTLETS® [NARITA], which opened in April 2013. This is an outlet mall consisting of about 120 shops from various genres, including Le Creuset, which sells kitchenware, and Pierre Marcolini, which sells chocolates, as well as fashion and fashion good retailers. In addition to its large scale, it features amenities that cater to international customers, which are well-suited to its location about 10 minutes by car (approx. 15 minutes by shuttle bus) from Narita Airport. It is equipped with a currency exchange center that deals in seven currencies, and has staff who can speak English and Chinese. There are also a wide variety of restaurants, including Chinese, Korean, Italian and sushi. A shuttle bus is available every 30 minutes from Narita Airport, and flight arrival and departure information is displayed in the facility, allowing you to use your time before or after your flight effectively.

“Hokkaido Showroom” in New Chitose Airport Terminal, which serves as an entrance to Sapporo, Hokkaido, is a commercial facility like a theme park where visitors can enjoy movies or a hot spring spa. “DORAEMON WAKUWAKU SKY PARK”, featuring “Doraemon”, has various play equipment including a slide shaped like dora-yaki (a pancake-like confection filled with a sweet bean paste) and is popular with families. “New Chitose Airport Manyo-no-Yu Hot Spring Spa”, equipped with an open-air bath and a bedrock bathing spa, also provides accommodations and is convenient when taking an early-morning flight. On the second floor, there are a variety of shops that sell western confectioneries made in Hokkaido, which are popular with the name of “Hokkaido sweets”, or local crafts. You can also enjoy gourmet foods from Hokkaido on the third floor.
In Yokohama, which has one of the largest ports in Japan, “MARK IS minatomirai” opened in June 2013 and “PREMIER YOKOHAMA” is scheduled to open in the fall. The “sea gateway” of Japan continues to evolve as well.
