Take a short trip and wander around towns from Shibuya to Yokohama on the Tokyu Lines

Spend time at a café in a trendy city during the day and enjoy the night view in Yokohama at night.

Leaving Shibuya at 12:15 pm is a little late for sightseeing, but the schedule is ideal for “visiting popular spots in Tokyo during the day and having dinner and enjoying the night view in Yokohama”. He says, “It may seem a lot to cover. This plan is made based on the advice from my Japanese friend. I am looking forward to seeing how it actually works.”

Asking for directions to the “Former Asakura Residence”, one of the spots planned to visit while wandering around in Daikanyama

He first headed out to Daikanyama, only 2 minutes or one station away from Shibuya on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Daikanyama is popular as a fashion town with rows of many trendy shops including Hillside Terrace, a complex famous for its beautiful building. Romain, who usually wears only black or white for everyday clothes, seems to be impressed with this sophisticated town. He says, “The harmony of the color of green from the trees planted along the streets and throughout the town and the buildings is beautiful. It is fun just to wander around in this town.”

What Romain, who is interested in old Japanese architecture, particularly wanted to see was the “Former Asakura Residence”, a Japanese style villa built in 1919. It is near the busy main road, 5 minutes walk from Daikanyama Station, but once he stepped into the grounds, another world spread before his eyes.

The “Former Asakura Residence”, designated as one of the national important cultural properties, is a place full of beautiful traditional Japanese architecture including a tiled roof, wide wooden corridor, tatami-floored hall that turns into a large space when a partition is removed, and paper sliding doors with beautiful scenes of nature painted on them. The garden, which makes good use of the hilly land, is beautiful in all seasons and it is especially gorgeous when leaves turn red in autumn.

Relax at an European-style café

He got on the Tokyu Toyoko Line again and headed over to Jiyugaoka. Jiyugaoka is popular as a fashionable town with plenty of unique boutiques and variety stores. There are also many restaurants where you can taste specialty lunches prepared by skillful chefs and cafés where you can sit down and relax.

Romain says, “The European-style café culture where you can relax on the patio is well-established in Japan, too. It reminded me of time I spent at cafés in Paris and brought back memories.

After relaxing at a cafe, Romain headed out to Yokohama, which he had intentionally avoided up until now because he had thought it was too far, to enjoy dinner and the night view. He says, ” I had always wanted to go because I heard that you can see both Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree from high-rise buildings in Yokohama on a nice day. I was really surprised to hear that I can get to Yokohama from Shibuya in 30 minutes. Stations on the Toyoko Line are nice and clean. The signs are easy to follow, too.”

He had dinner at Chinatown as planned. Yokohama Chinatown has about 600 restaurants and souvenir shops is one of the biggest Chinatowns in the world. Romain says, “It is amazing to see this many restaurants and shops, but I also enjoyed the ‘hybrid’ atmosphere that blends in with the Japanese environment.”

I am satisfied with the variety of experiences, says Romain.
“I am satisfied with the variety of experiences I had and it is hard to believe I did all these in just half a day”, says Romain.

The finale of this trip is the Red Brick Warehouse, a popular spot in Yokohama. He enjoyed the Christmas illumination that colorfully decorates the 100-year-old building and the night view of the port town before he headed home. He says, ” I am very satisfied that I was able to enjoy such a variety of experiences wandering around towns in just half a day.”

When I’m asked for directions, I try to explain as clearly as possible because I want visitors to have a good impression of Yokohama.

Along the Tokyu Dentetsu line, professional cleaning crews clean the stations three times a day in order to keep them clean and comfortable. In addition, all of the station staff regularly carry a small plastic bag with them and they pick up trash whenever they see it. Mr. Sasaki also carries a plastic bag in his pocket, of course.

At Yokohama Station, we are often asked for directions to get somewhere by visitors here for shopping and sightseeing. When asked, I always try to give directions as clearly as possible. For example, rather than saying, “go out of the central exit and it’s on your left”, it is easier to understand and also pleasing if you say, “after you go out of the central exit, you’ll see a coffee shop and turn left there.” To do this, having knowledge only of the map is not enough. I walk around the town on my days off. The number of visitors from overseas is increasing these days and sometimes I give 20-30 people directions on the weekend. We have made a project team to study together so that we can give directions smoothly with words. We would like to do our best so visitors will have a good impression of Yokohama.
