Held every year at the end of August on Sado Island, which lies in the Japan Sea off the coast of Niigata, is the “Earth Celebration”, a music and performance festival headlined by Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble, Kodo, a world-renowned Japanese drum performance group based on Sado Island. In the main event “Shiroyama Concert” that starts around 6:00 pm every day at the outdoor grass venue, you can experience a very exciting and powerful performance together with artists from all over the world. There are other attractions including dance and Taiko workshops and stalls selling goods from around the world and handmade craftworks of Sado Island. You can enjoy a special moment surrounded by music, nature and traditional culture.
You need to purchase tickets in advance in order to attend a workshop (see official website). If you need accommodation, making a reservation early is recommended as accommodations near the venue will become full quickly. There is a camping site on the coast about 10 minute bus ride away from the venue and the rental service of tents is available as well. It is a good idea to take insect repellent and sunscreen with you.
To attend Shiroyama Concert, entrance order colour cards are distributed at Kisaki Shrine from 9:00 am on the day of the concert and you may enter the venue in the order of the numbered cards. A rug is essential as the ground will be covered with frost at night. Take food and drink and enjoy the concert like a picnic.
